In Holborn, the pavements are actively patrolled by vigilant robot assistants that prioritise public safety. These machines can provide first aid, alert emergency services, and warn pedestrians of hazards. Since their implementation earlier this year, some locals have grown used to their presence, while others continue to express concerns about the ethics of AI usage.

On Monday, Chimamanda Ada, a 25-year-old commuter who is visually impaired, took a fall on her way to work. A nearby robot detected this, approached her and offered assistance: a first aid kit or call emergency services. The robot asked if she needed assistance and provided her with an option for a first aid kit or to call emergency services. It can respond to verbal responses or triggers to the button controls on its arms. Chimamanda told the robot she needed an ambulance after she dislocated her knee. The robot quickly assessed the situation, notified emergency services and physically administered first aid, providing an ice pack and painkiller to ease the discomfort.

The robot analysed the surrounding area, identified a raised slab in the pavement that caused the fall and alerted pedestrians to prevent further incidents. This technology has proven to be an efficient assistant in emergencies and is accessible for pedestrians of all abilities.
